Four Pillars of Student Management

The Learner

I feel that students are developing in the way they interact socially, manage their emotions as well as intellectually. Not every student progresses in these developments the same way or within the same timeframe, so it is important that I, as the teacher, recognize this and adapt my teaching style to meet student needs. Doing this creates a welcoming and safe environment for students to explore science, make mistakes and not be afraid to keep trying. For students to obtain the rigorous and enriching science curriculum, they must be prepared to define, analyze problems and create solutions to better prepare them for life after high school, whether it is in college or in the career of their choice. It is important that students understand learning does not only occur in a classroom, but every life experience is a learning opportunity.

The Teacher

As a teacher, student success is of the utmost importance. To be successful in guiding students through their courses, I need to familiarize myself with my students, which will help me be more effective in facilitating a classroom that fosters mutual respect, routines that students are familiar with, and providing a culture where students understand that I am invested in their success in and out of the classroom. To best support students’ needs, I must be passionate, empathetic and motivational. Positive mindsets and excitement in the journey of understanding can be infectious.

The Content

Earth Science is a fascinating subject because it studies all the amazing phenomena that we experience every day. Making sense of even the most mundane daily occurrences, such as why the wind blows fosters a sense of awe and wonder about the incredible world around us. Being able to explain these phenomena through scientific principles, experimentation, research and use of technology allows students to unlock the mysteries of our planet, the solar system and beyond.

The Context

Within the classroom, it is imperative for the teacher to create a welcoming space for students. Having a classroom built upon mutual respect, teamwork and inquiry allows students to unlock their full potential in science courses throughout their educational careers. Being an empathetic teacher who genuinely cares about their students is something students can recognize, and if they know the teacher has their best interests at the forefront, interactions with students have a greater likelihood to be positive. The classroom itself should have a seating arrangement that fosters collaboration, teamwork and engagement, decorated in a culturally responsive manner, and be a place where students feel comfortable taking risks.
